Spring is arriving very quickly at Oak & Lily!
I am so excited the days are feeling longer and just a wee bit warmer!
There are SO many goodies arriving in the shop I can’t even contain the squeals of excitement from escaping whenever I open a box of something super wonderful like these seeds from Strathcona 1890.
I came across this awesome little company whose products make my heart beat faster and whose story makes my heart swell with goodness. Not only do they stand behind an important standard of non-GMO, open pollinated, non-chemically treated, heirloom seeds for sustainable food resources, but they are so generous and creative in how they’re doing it!
You MUST read their story of how they came to be source for sustainable food programs in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Strathcona 1890 packages heirloom seeds in a wonderful container using historical botanical illustrations that capture the feel of early Vancouver. Their vision was to create collections of easy to grow seeds that people with little or even no yard could grow in order to produce a portion of the food they eat. This would cut down on our carbon foot print as well connect people with the very nature of what they eat.
Proceeds from sales of these unique collections of seeds help create new jobs in the Downtown Eastside as well as help develop sustainable food growing programs at Vancouver’s inner city schools, daycares and community centres. Job creation is focused primarily on youth, single parents and people living on disability.
You should also check out their truck farm movement. They’re growing gardens in the back of pick up trucks!
Come by the shop to see the newest line up and check on my own little micro-greens kit all planted up!
